Sliding Gates Automation

Sliding gates automation systems are typically used to increase security, allow the gates to be opened and closed from a location remote to the gate, for health and safety reasons, or when the gates are used frequently. So a sliding gate which is perhaps only used a few times a day, where security is not a big issue, where there are limited health and safety risks, and personnel are available to open the gate, would not normally require automation. For all other situations it almost certainly would. If a sliding gate doesn't have automation but the security situation increases or other circumstances change to justify it, automation can usually be retro-fitted to the gate relatively easily.

Specific reasons to install automation for security reasons would include:
  • Frequent vehicle access
  • Night time vehicle access
  • Requirement to operate the gate from a remote location
  • Risk of theft from any part of the premises - e.g. staff vehicles and company property
  • Protecting combustible materials from arson attacks
  • Protection against industrial espionage (for some high-tech business this could be a reason on its own)
  • Part of the protection measures against contamination - e.g. for premises preparing foodstuffs
Health and Safety reasons would include:
  • Preventing the public and in particular children from entering a site
  • Protecting visitors to a site from dangers such as forklift trucks
  • Physical effort required and hazards arising from the movement of large and heavy gates
It's also likely that automation improving site security and health and safety would be a factor in reducing insurance premiums.

Automation is provided via a rack and pinion system, which will be 240 volts or 3 phase depending on the size of the gate. This is a proven and very reliable system, which is easily serviced and maintained.

When automation is used, there are many system options available. In fact the exact requirements for individual sites will vary so much, that bespoke solutions mean that very few systems will ever be exactly the same. This is partly because access control forms part of the overall system and the variations here are almost endless. For example, the gates could be automated with access and locking control from a remote office on the other side of a site and monitored by security staff via CCTV.
